The RUN
Following huge success in 2008 and 2009 ORBIS Ireland is yet again taking a group to Addis Ababa to take part in the GREAT ETHIOPIAN RUN. In joining us you will not only take part in an experience of a lifetime, but you will also give the precious gift of sight to thousands of people in Ethiopia.
On 21 November 2010 Addis Ababa over 30,000 people will take to the streets to participate in Africa’s biggest road race – a challenging 10km at 10,000 feet above sea level. Along with some of the world’s most renowned athletes (Haile Gebrselassie and Richard Nerurkar) there’s a huge variety of runners of all age groups and fitness levels taking part.

Why ORBIS Ireland?
ORBIS Ireland’s vision is to eliminate blinding trachoma – a highly contagious but completely preventable eye disease - and restore sight to the most rural villagers in Ethiopia by the end of 2012. In these remote parts of Ethiopia, primary eye care is almost non-existent. Trachoma is a common disease in these areas, which starts in childhood. If left untreated this slowly progressive and painful disease robs its victims of their sight, their childhoods and ultimately their livelihoods.
By joining ORBIS Ireland at the GREAT ETHIOPIAN RUN you will help us make our vision a reality...

TRAINING TIPS
10k training is a fun way to start running, lose weight, and feel great. It is also not as time consuming as marathon or half marathon training.
A beginning competitive runner is an athlete that is relatively new to racing and competition. This type of runner is just beginning to follow a structured training program, but has the desire to improve race performance and is willing to commit to a consistent training regime, including some high intensity workouts.
Your 10K training should contain rest days, easy runs, and long runs, speed training workouts and lactate threshold workouts. It is designed to begin to build speed, improve speed endurance and increase both general and functional strength.
