El Camino de Santiago
Join ORBIS Ireland for an 8 day trip to El Camino de Santiago from 9-16 May 2013. Completing the last 115km of the French Way (section 8) from Sarria to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Santiago de Compostela, this unique walking holiday is one you are sure to remember.
The trip:
DAY 1: On arrival, you will be transferred directly to your hotel in Sarria in time to enjoy your first evening meal. Following this, a short information evening will be held at your hotel.
DAY 2: Sarria to Portomarn (22km). Your journey begins with a peaceful walk through shady oak woods, pretty villages and quiet country roads.
DAY 3: Portomarn to Palace do Rei (25km). From the village El Camino crosses the river Minho and climbs steadily upwards passing beautifully sculpted Romanesque churches.
DAY 4: Palace do Rei to Arza (28km). Your journey commences on a downhill slope through a forest trail and across several streams passing through timeless Medieval villages.
DAY 5: Arza to Rua (18km). This shaded section of El Camino passes through woods, along streams and through sleepy villages arriving in Rua, one of the less crowded spots on El Camino.
DAY 6: Rua to Santiago de Compostela (21km). You are nearly there! Along this stage is where pilgrims traditionally washed in the river before reaching Santiago de Compostela. The tall eucalyptus trees line the route and from the top of the 'Mount of Joy' you can see your destination - the Cathedral of Santiago. After your descent into the city, you will have an opportunity to witness this UNESCO World Heritage Site up-close, marvel at the architecture and relish the atmosphere of this cultural and spiritual mecca.
DAY 7: With so much to do and see, Santiago de Compostela is sure to entertain you and you will have plenty of time to visit the historic centre and stroll through the streets of this beautiful city.
DAY 8: After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for your return flight to Dublin, leaving behind a wonderful city but taking some incredible memories away with you.
